Art book “Ars academica: 100 Works of Art of the University of Tartu”
“Ars academica: 100 Works of Art of the University of Tartu” is the first art album to give an overview of the University of Tartu’s rich and varied collection of art.
After the forewords, the book provides a summary of the history of the university’s art collection over two centuries. The main part of the book contains reproductions of one hundred artworks presenting a cross-section of the university's rich art collection throughout periods, schools, genres, and authors. Special attention has been given to works related to the university’s history and to people affiliated with the university.
The bulkiest section of the album includes prints and drawings, which are represented in the collections in largest numbers. Most of the paintings come from the 20th century, complemented by marvellous examples of 19th-century portrait painting. Among sculptures, plaster casts of antique statues prevail; while much fewer original sculptures can be found in the university’s collections.
The album was compiled by art historians Ingrid Sahk of the University of Tartu Museum and Moonika Teemus of the University of Tartu Library, and designed by Angelika Schneider.
The book is bilingual, with parallel texts in Estonian and English, and was published in 2019 by the University of Tartu Museum.
The book was published to mark the exhibition “Ars academica: The University of Tartu Art Collection”, held until 22 March 2020 at Kadriorg Art Museum in Tallinn and from 1 October 2020 at the University of Tartu Museum and Art Museum.
The book is available at the museum shop and at bookshops in Estonia. Buy the book now from the university gift shop shop.ut.ee/en
