The collection consists of more than 3000 brown and grey sulphur casts of antique coins. Original coins were too expensive and acquiring the best items for one collection was impossible so casts of coins became popular.
The University of Tartu Art Museum obtained its collection of casts of coins in the 19th century and they were a great illustrative material for the students of the time. Such intact collections were packed into beautiful book-shaped boxes, such as Th. E Mionnet’s collection, and dresser-type boxes with drawers, such as Stieglitz’ collection in The University of Tartu Art Museum.
